Savoring Day’s End

After rising each morning,
my day overflows with activities.

Like a leaf tossed into a stream
swept along by the current.
Propelled through waking hours
by a never-ending list of tasks.

Some necessary, many discretionary;
others routine; a few, time-critical.

When caught in a swirling eddy,
forward progress stops.
Tasks are assessed,
shuffled, reprioritized.

Then, released from the eddy,
tumbling forward again.

Until, as the day draws to a close
like a leaf in the shallows,
snuggled among soft covers,
I savor the sweetness of doing nothing.
