Friendships Are Fire

Friendships are sometimes hard to ignite, sputtering to life before flaming out. Now and then, they begin with wood that is too green, failing to burn fully. Other times, they are so intense, we must turn our backs to the scorching heat. Left untended, they smolder, creating acrid smoke that stings and chokes. Now and again, they must be extinguished before consuming everything in their path. On occasion, they result in a painful burn and permanent scar. Others remain a spark, hidden among ash, rekindled with gentle, steady breaths. At their best, dry wood forms their foundation, layered with space for air. Replenished often, they burn clear and bright, casting light into darkness, warming our souls.
