About Pamela Bergmann
Growing up on a small farm in rural, southeastern Nebraska, I discovered my passion for travel in 1972, when I spent two months in Europe as Northwest Missouri State University’s “Ambassador to Sweden,” followed by one month traveling on my own. That experience opened my eyes to the larger world and instilled in me the confidence to continue exploring this amazing planet we all share.
In 1974, I moved to Phoenix to attend graduate school at Arizona State University, where I fell in love with the desert, mountains, and wide-open spaces, and took up outdoor activities including hiking and backpacking. Beginning in 1981, still working as a socioeconomic consultant for private consulting firms, I began my migration to the far north, moving first to San Francisco, followed by the Seattle area, and finally, to Anchorage.
After moving to Alaska full-time in 1983, I never looked back. The landscapes, especially the mountains, as well as the wildlife and people stole my heart. In 1986, I began a career in public service, working for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). After one year with the U.S. Minerals Management Service, I spent the next 27 as part of the Office of the Secretary, retiring as the DOI Regional Environmental Officer for Alaska. Along the way, I continued traveling in Alaska and the Lower 48 in addition to over 60 countries and all seven continents. I have had the great fortune to share many of those adventures with my sweetheart, partner, and spouse of over thirty years, John Duffy.
Now in my “third chapter,” I am taking time to reflect on the amazing opportunities and adventures that this farm girl from Nebraska has been privileged to experience, while as the same time, continuing to plan the next adventure for John and me.
Last, but not least, I am dedicating this website to my parents, Nadene and Julius Bergmann, Jr., who instilled in me from an early age, a curiosity about the world. I am also dedicating this website to my spouse, John, whose never-ending support of my photography and writing helped give me the courage to make this website a reality.
